My hubs and I do not celebrate Valentine’s Day like most people. When we were first dating, I was in deep financial trouble and could not afford to purchase my hubs anything for Valentine’s Day. Therefore, we started a tradition of getting creative with our Valentine’s gifts. I like to think we are keeping the mission of St. Valentine alive by avoiding the over-consumption that is usually found on Valentine’s Day.
These are just some of the budget friendly Valentine’s Day ideas that we have used to keep our budget low and some are things that we cannot wait to try (I personally cannot wait to try the photo booth one!).
The easiest and fastest way to save more on Valentine’s Day is to do-it-yourself. Make your own homemade Valentine’s Day cards (great activity with the kids) and make your own Valentine’s Day treats. Every year, on Valentine’s Day I make a special breakfast of heart shaped pancakes with sprinkles, eggs, and a huge batch of bacon. My kids love the pancakes and my hubs loves that I actually made a full breakfast.
2. Think Outside the Box
If you cannot find a baby sitter for Valentine’s Day or cannot afford to go to dinner, make it a special night at home. Head to the dollar store and purchase some Valentine’s Day décor and candles, decorate your room, order a pizza (or pop in a frozen one), and wait for the kids to go to bed to enjoy your newly decorated room.
3. Scavenger Hunt
Do you save all those special little trinkets from your relationship like movie ticket stubs and special t-shirts? Make a fun scavenger hunt out of them for your hubby to find and you decide where the scavenger hunt ends up.
4. Go on a Unique Date
Skip the usual dinner date at the fancy restaurant and try one of these ideas instead:
Run a 5K together
If you are a sporty couple, this is a great way to have a little competition in your relationship. In addition, all that running and jogging releasing tons of endorphins to help elevate your lovey-dovey mood!
Price is Right Challenge
Pick any amount from $5, $10, $15, or $20 and play a little date night challenge with each other. The challenge is to each spend the same amount of money on the other one in thirty minutes or less. No plastic allowed, in fact leave the wallets at home to make sure you both stick to your budget amount. Head to the bank or ATM, withdraw your designated amount and head to the mall, your favorite department store, or even the thrift store. Set your phone’s timer for thirty minutes and go on a hunt for an amazing gift with the cash you have and try to beat the other’s time.
